Bangkok City Pillar Shrine

Birthplace of Bangkok Dynasty

In 1782, King Rama I erected a pillar in the new capital as the patron saint of the city, which became the present-day Lak Mueang, the Bangkok City Pillar Shrine. The Lak Mueang is now dedicated to the two pillars erected by Rama I and IV, as well as to the Buddhas and the five patron deities inside.

When King Rama I planned to move the capital to the east bank of the Chao Phraya River in 1782, he erected a pillar in the center of the new capital as the patron deity of the city. The Bangkok City Pillar Shrine became the first building in the new capital, the Origin of the Bangkok Dynasty.

During the reign of Rama IV, the Bangkok City Pillar Shrine in Bangkok was maintained and renovated, and another national pillar was added. Thus, in today’s Bangkok City Pillar Shrine, you can see Two Pillars Standing Side by Side, which are the Spiritual Reliance and Source of Faith.

The Popular and Crowded Shrine

In 1982, the bicentennial of the establishment of the Bangkok dynasty and the Bangkok City Pillar Shrine, Five Guardian Deities are introduced to bless the peace and prosperity of the country.
