Motomachi Roman Catholic Church

Altar Presented by Pope Benedict

Hakodate Motomachi Roman Catholic Church was started in 1859 and was destroyed by fire several times in its history, and was last rebuilt in 1923. The church has a 33-meter-high bell tower and is a typical Gothic-style building. The central altar and the Passion of Jesus statue inside the church were given by Pope Benedict XV.

Hakodate Motomachi Roman Catholic Church is located on the north side of the famous slope Daisanzaka and was started in 1859. Historically, Motomachi Catholic Church was destroyed by fire three times and was last rebuilt in 1923.

Motomachi Catholic Church is built in Gothic Style, and the 33-meter-high bell tower is topped with a chicken-shaped weathervane 風見鶏 (The Weathercock), one of the church’s symbols.

The central altar and the sculptures of Jesus on the Fourteen Stations of the Cross on both walls of Motomachi Catholic Church are wooden carvings made by Italian craftsmen and are a token of sympathy Presented by Pope Benedict 15. The church also has several beautiful Religious Artworks such as wood carvings, stone carvings, and paintings.
